Still no losses!

We received a few comments asking how we decide which Kiva borrowers to lend to. First, we rely of Kiva to present only those deemed eligible. While each request is described, we try to eliminate any bias by selecting borrowers with a random number generator. It works like this:

When you select "lend" on Kiva, you are taken to a list of borrowers needing money. At the end of the first page, it tells you the number of pages of listings there are. Today, for example, there were 138. We use a random number generator to select a page. Each page contains 8 listings, and we use a random number to make the final selection. That is all there is to it.

By the way, to generate the numbers we use the program Andrew Culver developed for John Cage. He makes it available as shareware here:

You should practice to be sure you can complete your section in 10 minutes. We expect to have Book IV covered and doubling up should be fine.</span></span></span>

There was a comment from someone that indicated they could not participate in a reading in New York. Keep in mind that for the October 20 reading it doesn’t matter where you are. The most important point is the time; you can adjust to your time zone. You don’t even need to leave home or office. Also, Book IV is only 35 pages. If you assume it takes 2:30 to read a page and do the math, 35 readers gives a 2:30 performance time.

Given the dispersion of people we can double up parts, or confirm new pages depending on the number of responses I get between now and, say, October 15.

Depending on the response to the October 20 reading we may make this a series.

an editor of <em>bend of bay</em> prefers the Naxos audiobook version. It is pricey, but if you do buy it through the following link our 4% cut will go to micro loans as described on our masthead/about page.

I happened to run across your website while browsing. Comment? Uh, well, I probably hold the Guinness record for taking more than a half century to read the book. In the aggregate, including all the backtracking, I have read it hundreds of times. Riverrunning the book again, I find that each old/new page takes on a new mosaic. I (sort of) started as a grad student in 1958, when I dropped in on Thornton Wilder's Finnegans Wake Society in New Haven, and was puzzled by what the wisemen referred to as the work's "grids." That was back in the olden days when a student's toolkit was used to assemble what we then called "meaning." Occasionally, I was spurred on by arguments with my old friend, Joe Campbell. Now in my retired dottage, I can lose myself for hours in those glorious pages.

Editor's note: Music by Brian Eno, design by Roy Lichtenstein. Video feed from www.ubu.com.

From ubu.com: "Pond Way can be described as one of Cunningham's 'nature studies' where the movement evokes birds, animals or landscapes. It is a lyrical, contemplative and sensuous piece, with the movement, according to Cunningham, being reminiscent of the game of skimming stones over a pond, which he loved to play as a child. The production is further enriched with a backcloth from the visual artist Roy Lichtenstein and a soundscape by Brian Eno. "
